28th July 2002... Yad Moss to Alston

This was the last of the "day trips". In total we were on the coach for about 5 hours, giving us a walking time of just over 6 hours. However the coach journey gave us time to look back on previous parts of the walk so far.

And so we started at Yad Moss at height of 600 metres, this walk would be "all down hill" most of the way.... one quick look back towards Teesdale and off we went.

Yad Moss is near the watershed between the Tees and the South Tyne rivers...and it has to be said there is not a lot up there.

As we descended into the South Tyne valley we met signs of the long forgotten settlers of this wild place.

As soon as we dropped down into a sheltered area it was time for lunch by the side of water that would eventually be part of the mighty River Tyne.

Not a bad view as we
downed our yoghurt.
After lunch we continued down stream to Tynehead, pausing to look back up toward Yad Moss in the distance.

 .

At Tynehead  we met the South Tyne Trail which we were to follow, at least in spirit, for the rest of the day. Already the countryside was becoming more gentle and the walking  fairly easy.

The weather was perfect... warm but not too hot. The odd cloud in the sky just made the scene more attractive.

The South Tyne River gradually increased in size as we follow it's journey downstream and cross the many small streams that join it from either side.
We took a detour to look at one of these streams as it takes a dramatic plunge over the Ashgill Falls. These are one of the few waterfalls in England that you can actually go behind and look through the water.

Gentle walking as we continued towards Crossgill on our way to Garrigill.

At Garrigill we paused awhile for a rest. The George and Dragon seduced a few of us into liquid refreshment.

Here we met up with the "A party" and also with the Pennine Way which we followed for the rest of the walk  along the rivers side into Alston.

It was a good day for farmers to harvest the silage and that is what they were doing.

We also noticed sheep sheltering from the sun as we passed them.
By time we are just outside Alston the
South Tyne has grown a little.
Into Alston with time for Fish and Chips and a pint.....
