The Bradford CHA is a walking and social club for people who
live in, or near, the city of Bradford in the heart of the West Riding of
Yorkshire (now called West Yorkshire).
Located, as it is, on the edge of the Pennines, Bradford is
within a few minutes travel of some of the best hiking country in the North of
England. One of the main aims of the club has always been to help
folk enjoy this wonderful opportunity.
We hope you will visit our site many times in the years to
come.
As you can see it is still in the development stages (what website
isn't). Click on the headings below to find out more.
Bradford CHA Rambling and Social Club Established in
1903.
Memorabilia and records are stored in Bradford City
Archive. The oldest item is 1910 syllabus. We have most syllabuses from 1925
onwards.
The club raised funds to buy and operate its own coach in
1967 and for this and other achievements was awarded to Sir John Hunt award in
1973. Due to changes in Road Traffic legislation the coach was sold and since
then the club has hired a coach, first from West Yorkshire Road Car company
(which was of a similar age to the club), then after the privatisation of the
bus industry, from Keighley and District Travel.
The club got into computerisation early, from 1986 the
syllabus production was switched from hot metal to word processing on a Cyber
mainframe computer using a Textjab line editor (ecch!). In 1990 production was
switched to the more user friendly IBM PC. The mailing labels were produced by
computer from the mid eighties onward.
Now it seems the club is one of the first non-university
English hiking clubs venture onto the Internet.
In 1989 the club gave £200 to the Three Peaks
Restoration project. It was the first rambling club to do this.
For over 25 years we have made annual donations to the
The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Organisation and the Cave Rescue Organisation
(both of which rescue cavers, ramblers, climbers, and animals).
The Bradford CHA is affiliated to The Countrywide Holidays Association,
who have their head office in Manchester. The Association, amongst other
things, offers excellent value holidays aimed at the walker.
