Farsley Celtic's eventful season took another twist on Saturday as
they fought out an enthralling 3-3 draw with Gateshead at Throstle
Nest. The hosts started brightly with both Roy Stammar and Darren Roberts going close but it was the Tynesiders who struck first on 14 minutes when Anthony Shandran chased a through ball and flicked the ball over the onrushing Tom Morgan. It was 2-0 seven minutes before the break when David Morgan hammered home from close range after a sweeping cross field move from the visitors. Farsley hit back on 63 minutes when sub Mark Bett poked the ball in after a goalmouth scramble and it was all square three minutes later with Bett nodding home after a smart move down the left by Stammar and Matt Smithard. Gateshead made it 3-2 on 70 minutes when James Curtis rose above the Celts defence to head home from a corner. The home side clinched a point on 75 minutes with a smart header from Andy Shields but an ensuing melee resulted in the dismissal of Farsley's Amjad Iqbal and Gateshead's David Morgan. The Celts went close in the dying stages with Stammar, Roberts and Smithard all spurning gilt edged opportunities. Last Wednesday night the Celts put up a brave display in the final of the West Riding County Cup before going down 2-1 to Halifax Town. It was the Celts fourth successive final appearance and their third defeat on the trot. Mick Midwood grabbed a late consolation goal after the Shaymen had built up a two goal lead. Lee Sinnott's men now face two final away matches to round off a highly successful season. On Wednesday night they travel north to face Bishop Auckland before heading west next Saturday to face Leek Town. A final league placing of 3rd looks the most likely scenario. |
